The Sobey's pool of water is drying up in this heat, but it still brings in some good shorebirds. On Aug. 14 a S-b Dowitcher did its sewing-machine drilling while tight within the grasses of the western edge. Aug.15 I saw 3 greater Yellowlegs, several Lessers, many Killdeers, 1 Least Sandpiper, 5 Semipal Sandpipers, several Semipal Plovers, 1 Spotted Sandpiper.
2 of us watched what we thought was an American Bittern drop into the cattails of Cranberry marsh on Aug.14-- we eventually concluded that it was an immature Black-crowned Night Heron. The southeast marshlands have Virginia Rail, Moorhens, Coots, Wood Ducks, and several shorebird species.
