Hi; I hope all read the reports from Cranberry & Iroquois for Oct. 11,2004 .
Iroquois site is only covered on the weekend, but as you can see it can be a
very productive site if the winds are conducive for a inland flight !

Light winds from the North,N.E,S,&S.E. are very good inland days . When these
conditions arise it would be most helpful if some obsevers would take advantage
of this site ! There are count sheets mounted in a box on the under side of the
platform .

It would be great if we could get a more accurate count & hours at this site .
My gut feeling is we miss atleast 1,000 to 2,000 migrating Raptors due to lack
of coveridge !

If winds are strong from the above mentioned directions you will look at empty
skies as the birds will be migrating south at Cranberry . Jean Iron, Ron
Pittaway etc. where there & can verify what a differance of 10 Km can make !

My hope is that some fellow Hawk Watchers will give our site a try, you may be
justly rewarded !!

Directions to Site ;

Take Hwy 401 East or West to Brock St.(Hwy 12) Whitby, North. Proceed North
through town untill you reach Taunton Rd.,Continue North 2.5 Km. Turn left at
Spencers Rd. Turn left at stop sign and park by the gate . Follow the path to
the left . Once you pass through the Cedar trees take the the path to the right
uo to the platform, you will have a 360 degree view !!!

Regards;

Mike Williamson

Yesterday (Oct 11), while walking my crop fields, I came across the first two
Lapland longspurs of the fall. Also overhad was an immature Peregrine, moving
South. Our farm is located near Stratford, in the bustling hamlet of
Sebringville!
                                          cheers, Antony John

Total observation time: 8.5 hours

Official Counter: Calvin Brennan

Observers: John Elliot, Paul Cypher

Weather:
Today’s conditions were partly sunny with variable amounts of cloud. Winds
were generally light and highly variable for much of the day becoming
moderate southeast in the late afternoon.

Observations:
The flight was similar to yesterdays but with smaller numbers and less
diversity overall. Much of the movement was directly overhead in mixed
kettles giving plenty of excellent views to appreciative hawk watchers.
Predictably the later passage was pushed to the north with the switch in
winds to the south. Highlighting the day were two Northern Goshawks, a
juvenile and a sub adult individual.

Predictions:
Rain is predicted to come into the area tomorrow afternoon and linger into
the latter portions of the week. This will likely backup a large number of
birds on the north shore of Lake Erie and produce some large flights
perhaps on the weekend but certainly early next week.
