Subject: [Ontbirds]Stilt Sandpiper - Holland Landing

Shorebird numbers and variety were largely unchanged from earlier in the week
at Holland Landing today but there were two welcome additions to the mainly
Lesser Yellowlegged second lagoon: one juvenile Stilt Sandpiper and one adult
Greater Yellowlegs. Ten more Northern Shovelers joined the lingering pair in
the fourth lagoon and there was still a Pied-billed Grebe in the third lagoon.
I also checked Schomberg today but there was nothing new to report. This
lagoons at this latter location have less shorebird habitat and generally less
bird activity than Holland Landing.
Not surprisingly, there was no sign of a Merlin at either location today. One
local Red-tail at each location made up the only raptor activity.
Ron Fleming, Newmarket
Directions:
The Holland Landing lagoons are at the end of Cedar Street in the north
part of Holland Landing, accessed by turning east from Yonge Street
(look for the white wagon wheels in front of the house on the corner of
Yonge and Cedar). Cedar St. is between Doane Road (on the south) and
Queensville Sdrd. (on the north). There are four cells, the muddy
edges of which are all worth checking, but the second lagoon definitely
offers the best shorebird habitat.
Holland Landing is just north of Newmarket, which in turn is just north of
Toronto.
