OFNC BIRD STATUS LINE - MAR 13 2005 AT 8:30 PM

This is Chris Lewis reporting.

A few more signs of spring crept into the Ottawa area this past
week. Ring-billed Gulls are increasing on the Ottawa River and
more Horned Larks are being seen in rural areas. A Belted
Kingfisher was at the ridge in the Britannia Conservation Area on
the 12th and a Red-winged Blackbird was along March Valley Rd.
near Klondike Rd. the same day.

No new waterfowl were reported, but 2 male BARROW'S GOLDENEYE are
still on the Ottawa River at Remic Rapids as of March 8th.
Several Glaucous Gulls were on the river along with the Ring-
billed, Herring and Great Black-backed Gulls as of the 13th, and
multiple reports of Cooper's Hawks came in from various locations
in suburban neighbourhoods. A Red-shouldered Hawk was seen flying
over Rifle Rd. at Shirley's Bay on the 13th as well.

A Snowy Owl was on Brownlee Rd. at Eagleson Rd. on the 8th. A
Barred Owl was "feeder-watching" at the Pine Grove Trail feeder on
Davidson Rd. on the 13th, and at least 9 GREAT GRAY OWLS were
still on March Valley Rd. on the morning of the same day.

At the Duck Club feeders on March Valley Rd. at Riddell Dr. 3 Wild
Turkeys have been seen regularly since March 8th. The female RED-
BELLIED WOODPECKER is still coming to the feeders at 6158 Rideau
Valley Dr. south of Manotick as of the 13th. One of the RED-HEADED
WOODPECKERS was seen at the old burn site on Whistler Rd. in
Constance Bay on the morning of the 13th, while being followed by
a Northern Shrike. Speaking of Northern Shrikes, several are still
being widely reported in the Ottawa area.

The TOWNSEND'S SOLITAIRE was most recently reported on Coxford St.
in Rothwell Heights on March 10th. The Carolina Wren in Rothwell
Heights was seen today the 13th at #62 Rothwell Dr.

Bohemian Waxwings continue to be seen in the Shirley's Bay area as
well as near Kerwin Rd., and approx. 30 Cedar Waxwings were in
Vincent Massey Park on the 13th. Finch reports have become a bit
more interesting over the past week. Six Pine Grosbeaks were on
O'Hara Cr. off Kerwin Rd. on the 12th, a single female HOARY
REDPOLL - the 1st report to the OFNC Bird Status Line of the year
- was found at the Hilda Rd. feeders on the 13th, along with the 2
female Common Redpolls that have been present here for about the
last 4 weeks. Small numbers of Pine Siskins and Common Redpolls
were also reported from the west end of Ottawa this past weekend.

Thank you - Good Birding!
