OFO members and friends are reminded of two upcoming outings in June
with John Miles. First is the St. Clair National Wildlife Area and
Point Pelee trip on June 18th . Meet at 7 a.m. at the parking lot of
the refuge off Townline Rd., about 18 km. west of Chatham. Breeding
birds should include Yellow-headed Blackbirds, Least Bittern, rails,
etc.
On June 25th John will lead our annual trip on the Bruce
Peninsula. Meet 7 a.m. at Tim Horton's in Hepworth about 12.5 km.
south of Wiarton on #6. On June 26th, meet at 7 a.m. at Tobermory
airport parking lot, west of #6 on Warner Bay Rd. Special birds to be
sought include Brewer's Blackbird, Raven, Virginia Rail, Clay-colored
Sparrow, Sandhill Crane, Upland Sandpiper, warblers, maybe owls. Also,
many wildflowers (orchids) & ferns.

Hello birders:
With migration in it's final stages, and the Atlas work nearing =
completion, perhaps the time is ripe to take a few minutes to consider =
documenting some of the amazing Review List birds that have graced our =
province so far in 2005. With the increased interest in digiscoping, =
and the use of digital cameras by many birders, a good number of amazing =
sharp images have been produced (see the OFO Website under 'photos'). =
Photographs alone, even of such high quality, will never replace the =
data that a fully written verification report provides the OBRC. Let me =
here extend a big 'thank you' to the many photographers who have given =
me their permission to circulate their images among the OBRC members. =
Not one person has said NO.=20
=20
This year, Kirtland's Warbler was a great find for many at Point Pelee =
National Park. The number of individuals observed there was =
unprecedented. Many have said there were two; a few are suggesting =
perhaps there were three. Written reports from observers describing =
their observations would easily clear this up. To my knowledge, only =
ONE written report has been submitted to the OBRC even though several =
hundred birders saw the bird(s) over the period they were present.
=20
I know, I know, I know, that writing up a rare bird report is considered =
by many to be a real pain in the butt, but you need to know how =
important it really is that these observations be part of the official =
provincial record. One birder told me he clearly saw three different =
Kirtland Warbler's at Pelee this year. When I asked him, very =
diplomatically, if he would consider writing them up, he looked at me as =
if I were on drugs!! I hope this gentleman makes his contribution to =
ornithology in Ontario. The OBRC has made it quite easy for birders to =
submit documentation. Just go to www.ofo.ca/obrc/ and fill out the form =
to the best of your ability. Together with the photographs, even 10 =
written Kirtland Warbler reports would really help the Committee.
=20
Documentation for numerous observations of Little Blue Heron, Glossy =
Ibis, White-winged Dove, Lark Sparrow, and especially Neotropic =
Cormorant just to mention a few would be most welcome. I urge everyone =
who has observed a Review List rare bird this year to please consider =
taking a few minutes to submit your reports. When doing this, please be =
sure to include the date, place, names of any other observers, a full =
description of the field marks you saw and any other data that you feel =
would be helpful to the Committee. Please also let us have everyone's =
FULL NAMES including any INITIALS. =20
=20
Thank you everyone, have a great summer.

Mary Schuster and I found 1 singing Dickcissel about 11am today, Sun Jun
12 in the location described in previous posts. I have received several
nice photos of this bird for the OFO page, and you can see them at
www.ofo.ca/photos
The only additional comment I would add to the previous directions (copied
below) is that although you can walk down both sides of the hydro lines,
but the trail is a little easier if you cross the hydo line and walk down
the far side. We arrived just after the rain today and it was very wet and
muddy. Waterproof shoes would have been an asset.
Carol
Directions as previously reported:
Directions: The hydro right-of-way extends directly south of Tremaine
Road, which is west of Hwy 25 (Bronte Rd) on Dundas St., very close to
the Burlington/Oakville boundary. The turn-off for parking, a road with
a chain across it, is on the south side of Dundas EAST (not west, as in
the original post) of Tremaine Rd. about 150m away. A large "local
attractions" highway sign is right beside it on the south side of
Dundas. Park and walk the road/tractor path south. It turns east, south,
then east again to join up with the hydro right-of-way and the Bronte
Park horse trail. Continue south to the hydro pole with two guy-wires;
it is the 12th pole south of Dundas. The bushes and trees directly after
and to the left of the trail at this point, where it makes a short
detour to avoid a gully, was where the bird was singing. It preferred
the bare branches on the south-east side of the trees. I saw no sign of
a metal sign with a number 85 on it, but if you walk farther down the
path, you come to a big Trans-Canada Pipeline on the left with a big
#14. You may need to search this whole area.
