At about 4 PM, Sunday, October 9, while doing the October Count in Section 8 for the Buffalo Ornithological Society, Doug Happ and I watched four Hudsonian Godwits on a spit and then in flight in Port Colborne, ON.The birds were seen from the beach at the end of Lorraine Rd.
Doug originally spotted the birds at some distance on a spit in the lake. They were with a flock of about 16 Semipalmated Sandpipers. These birds flew up together and then the godwits broke away and headed straight towards us for a short time before breaking to our left. I got my scope on the birds as they flew toward us. We watched them for perhaps 60 seconds as they flew over the bay toward us and then turned back out over the lake and eventually out of view. We determined that if they continued to fly south directly over the lake they would arrive at the American side in the vicinity of Silver Creek or possibly Evangola State Park. Lorraine Road is a North/South road that runs between Provincial 3 and the lake, intersecting Regional 5 (Kilally St) in Port Colborne. If you use google.maps.com and type in 400 Lorraine Rd, Port Colborne, ON you will be taken to the approximate location. Mike Zebehazy Orchard Park, NY [EMAIL PROTECTED]
