At least one Snowy Owl was still along Wall Rd between Trim and Frank
Kenny, east of Ottawa, this afternoon at around 2:30 PM. It was quite a
white bird, but its whiteness and the almost total lack of snow did not
make it easy to find, as it was tucked away in the north-west corner of
the farm property bounded by fences on the north side of Wall. It was
easier to spot driving east to west on Wall than vice versa. A scope is
recommended. There were also some rough-legged hawks, a Cooper's Hawk
and a kestrel in the general area. Beware of whitish garbage
masquerading as snowies!

Paul Matthews, Ottawa

Directions: Take the 417 and 174 east and exit at Trim Rd right (south).
Go up the hill and continue a few km to Wall Rd, then turn left.

This afternoon, at 2:10 p.m. Dave Don and I found an Eared Grebe in the
south lagoon at Grimsby. We studied the bird for about 1/2 hour. It is
still in moult but displays the highly peaked forehead and thin upturned
bill, dark back The ear tufts can be seen coming in and the neck feathering
coming in is also black. The bird was seen out in the open for a while but
moved into the reeds where it was diving in the southwest corner.

To reach Grimsby Lagoons:

Take QEW Niagara to Fifty Road, turn north towards the lake and take the
North Service road to Kelson Road, turn left. Take Kelson Road to the first
road and turn right. The sewage lagoons are on the left. You can park at
the large garage there on the west side and walk in or we parked at the
laneway which runs up the left side. There is a bit of mud in there so
boots are recommended. Please respect the no trespassing signs posted at
the north lagoon.

Cheers,
Cheryl Edgecombe
