Hi Ontbirders,

A quick trip to four of the sewage lagoons east of Ottawa (Embrun, St. Albert, Chesterville, & Winchester) this afternoon (Tuesday 24 April) produced scatterings of the (now) regular ducks, including Ruddy Ducks (Embrun, St.Albert, Chesterville), a few Lesser Scaup, & small numbers of American Wigeon & Gadwall. There was a pair of Blue-winged Teal at the Embrun Lagoon.
Shorebirds have yet to arrive in good numbers. There were two Greater Yellowlegs
at Embrun, but Winchester was the only place where there were a few new arrivals:
4 Wilson's Phalarope (all female), 5 Greater Yellowlegs, 3 Lesser Yellowlegs, &
3 Pectoral Sandpipers. Incidentally, the Winchester Lagoon is the only one where
there is much exposed mud (in one cell).

There were 3 Snow Geese feeding with Canada Geese in a field just north of
Morewood.

Please e-mail me privately for directions if required.

This morning along Bernhardt Rd. (north of Hwy. 9 and left off Dufferin =
St. by the Ansnorveldt Library) there were 20 mixed pairs of Northern =
Shovelors (mostly males) feeding in the temporary ponds near the end of =
the road as well as various Horned Larks, Savannah Sparrows, and =
Killdeer. In the evening, walking on the west side of Scanlon Creek =
Conservation Area, an Upland Sandpiper passed, calling overhead. I have =
not found them nesting in the area but I am interested to hear of any. =
Also, does anyone know if they are still nesting near the hydro fields =
near Nashville? As well, my wife and I were treated to a very close =
encounter with a porcupine as it prepared to bed down in the crotch of a =
poplar tree. Scanlon Creek is north of Bradford on Hwy. 11 between the =
9th and 10th Lines.

This morning I found 2 pairs of Green-winged Teal in a wet area across from the Skeet Club near the eastern end of the road. When I first turned on to this end, There were 6 Turkey Vultures overhead. Soon a pair of Yellow-shafted Flickers flew across the road! Many Canada Geese are nesting everywhere in the area.

Sorry for the late posting on this sighting. I just now arrived back at my computer. Despite the attrocious weather, at approx. 3 PM today a group from the Guelph Field Naturalists found an adult Henslow's Sparrow. The bird was found sitting on a small branch of a bush on Concession A where the 3 bridges cross Big Creek. Exact location is on the south side of Concession A between the second and third bridge counting from west to east. It was approx. 20 ft from the edge of the creek and about 3 feet off the ground. After viewing the bird for approx. 2 minutes, it jumped down into the grass underneath, and was lost to view. After 15 mins of trying to refind the bird, we gave up. Also of interest, while we were examining the bird through our binos to note field marks, and colours, a Whip-poor Will called from a not too distant location to the south east of where the sparrow was found. We were unable to locate this bird.
An OBRC report will be filed shortly.

Directions
From Lakeshore Drive and HWY 59 at Port Rowan, go 1 concession road north on Hwy 59 (about 1 KM.) turn left or West on Concession A until you turn a sharp "S" curve and drop into a marshy depression. The bridges are straight ahead a few hundred feet. Ensure you pull well off the road to allow traffic through, and do not block passage over the bridges.
