THE OFNC BIRD STATUS LINE , 7:30 am, MONDAY OCT. 29, 2007
This is Chris Lewis reporting.
The Ottawa-Gatineau Fall Bird Count held on Oct. 20 - 21 was a great
success, with a record high total of species, as well as a few record high
numbers and late dates. The final results will be posted on the OFNC web
site at www.ofnc.ca.
A CATTLE EGRET discovered on a farm near Perrault and Trim Rds. northeast of
Carlsbad Springs on the 21st was searched for on the following two days but
was not relocated.
Twenty-three species of waterfowl were found last weekend at our local
rivers, ponds and sewage lagoons. Three Cackling Geese were reported,
and BRANT continue to move through with several large flocks totalling up to
at least 1700 birds on the 24th. A pair of Canvasback was seen on the
Ottawa River off Shirley's Bay boat launch on the 25th and 26th. All 3 species
of Scoters continue to drop in, fly over, or just hang out on the
river. Numbers
of Greater and Lesser Scaup, Bufflehead and Common Goldeneye continue
to increase, a Long-tailed Duck and at least a half-dozen Red-breasted
Mergansers were spotted on the river between Britannia and Shirley's Bay
from the 22nd to the 26th.
Twenty-one GRAY PARTRIDGE were found on the Fall Count including the
previously reported covey east of the quarry pond along Giroux Rd. north of
Navan, ON, and a total of 83 Wild Turkeys were found in various locations.
Two Red-throated Loons were reported from the Ottawa River on the 24th; 2
(perhaps the same birds) were also seen from Andrew Haydon Park as well
as the Shirley's Bay boat launch on the 26th. Up to 15 Horned Grebes were
on the river on the 25th and 26th, and at least 3 of the EARED GREBES at the
Alfred sewage lagoons were still present on the 26th. A few more
Rough-legged Hawks have begun to move into our area, and 2 Golden
Eagles - an adult in Gatineau Park and an immature over the Ottawa River -
were reported on the 21st and 24th respectively. SANDHILL CRANE numbers
continue to increase, with 56 birds counted on the 21st in the cornfields
along and adjacent to Milton Rd. The shorebird count included 2 somewhat
late Spotted Sandpipers on the Quebec side, and a late record for Ottawa -
a 1st-winter Wilson's Phalarope at the Casselman sewage lagoons on the
21st. Black-bellied Plovers, White-rumped and Pectoral Sandpipers and
Dunlin have been present in small numbers on the still very exposed mud
flats off Andrew Haydon Park all last week. 76 Bonaparte's Gulls were held up
by the strong southwest winds on the 21st - most of them were feeding and
resting at the Casselman and Embrun sewage lagoons. A male
BLACK-BACKED WOODPECKER appeared briefly on the "ridge" in the Britannia
Conservation Area on the afternoon of the 26th before heading south.
After a year of nearly no reports of Bohemian Waxwings, it seems that they
have decided to visit us again - 129 were found on the Fall Count, and
groups of up to 2 dozen were seen at Andrew Haydon Park and along 6th
Line Rd. north of Kanata on the 24th and 26th. A few rather late passerines
including Marsh Wren, Ovenbird, Common Yellowthroat, and Lincoln's and
Vesper Sparrow were found on the Fall Count. Pine Grosbeaks have begun
to arrive in small numbers, and more reports of Snow Buntings, Pine Siskins
and Evening Grosbeaks continue to come in as well.
Thank you - Good Birding!
