Visitors:
Many! Thanks to all who attended the first day of the "Big" Festival of
Hawks. Many activities for young and old. AND good birding from the tower.
Over 400 Sharp-shinned Hawk passed the Tower today and were viewed by the
many visitors. I over heard one gust say, "I finally learned how to ID the
Sharpies!" Tomorrow we will try another species.
Weather:
Comfortable day. Wind less than 6 mph and mostly South. temp 20.3-26.4 C,
Pressure 30.34-30.27 in Hg falling slowly, cloud cover 40%>75%.
Raptor Observations:
Many Sharpies. South winds prevented others from showing higher numbers.
Osprey were moving about with one individual staying around again. Good
looks from Tower of all species.
Non-raptor Observations:
Few non-raptors. First day with Blue Jay numbers above 10! Several 'flocks'
with 10-20 birds. Last hour two groups of 10 screaming into the woods
avoiding real or unreal winged-predators.
Solitary Sandpiper (2 together!), Cardinal, Catbird 2, Hummer 1 (numbers
seem very low), Killdeer, Goldfinch 38+, Waxwings 26+, Pectoral sandpipers
(7), chickadee, gnatcatcher, magnolia War., B&W War., Blackpoll War.
Predictions:
A weak cold front is supposed to pass through over night and have minimum
precipitation but will lower the temperature and have North component winds
following. North component winds are raptor wind. Be there Sunday!
