Sunday, Sep.21/08
Observation time: 0800-14300 EST
Official Counter: Ron Stephenson, Rayfield Pye, Doug Lockrey
Observers: Greg Stuart, Karin & Jerry Chouinard, Jean Iron, Ron Pittaway,
Craig McLauchlan, John Stirrat, Dan & Karen Shire, Jim Fairchild, Jay
Silverberg, and several others, along with 20+ visitors
The weather---TUV=2, 16C, strong-medium NWwinds, rising bp, overcast becoming
partially sunny
Conditions were such that WE KNEW THERE WOULD BE A GREAT FLIGHT OF MIGRATING
RAPTORS---TO SEE 14 BALD EAGLES (5 adults) was a great bonus. The hawks came
through on several fronts--we had to be alert. Another plus was 34 BROAD-WINGED
HAWKS.
After 6.5 exhausting hours we settled for 720 hawks. THE TABLE BELOW SPEAKS FOR
ITSELF RE. THE NUMBERS OF ALL RAPTORS.
In addition we had a wonderful spectacle of a LANCASTER airplane noisily fly
right over our heads.
I thank a great team of observers, giving me time to botanize for a hour or so
with 25 people.
Non-raptors- Yellow-bellied sapsucker, magnolia warbler, 20+ common loons,
c.yellowthroat, brown thrasher, n.flicker, white-breasted nuthatch,
red-breasted nuthatch, lesser yellowlegs, ruby-crowned kinglet, killdeer,
several hummingbirds
