Highlights of reports received January 8 through January 15 from the Niagara Frontier Region include SLATY-BACKED GULL, SNOWY OWL, RUBY-CR. KINGLET and PINE SISKINS.

January 11, the SLATY-BACKED GULL was found again above Niagara Falls in Ontario, observed from the pulloff below the water control gates.

Missed on the report last week - SNOWY OWLS. Two in a restricted area of the Buffalo Airport December 27 to 29th, and a SNOWY OWL in flight over Townsend Road in the Town of Concord on December 23 and 24.

In the Village of Kenmore, a RUBY-CR. KINGLET at a suet feeder for three weeks.

 January 10, an unexpected COMMON RAVEN over the Village of  Silver Creek.

PINE SISKINS were widely reported the week. SISKINS at five locations in the Lake Ontario Plains, including 20 in the Town of Wilson. In Amherst, 30 SISKINS in a Williamsville yard along with 20 WHITE-W. CROSSBILLS, 2 COMMON REDPOLLS and a PURPLE FINCH. 20 more PINE SISKINS on Ruie Road in North Tonawanda. And smaller numbers at other locations. Also, up to three of COMMON REDPOLLS at several feeders.

WHITE-W. CROSSBILLS continue to be a highlight of the season. A dozen on Straley Road in the Town of Cheektowaga, at four locations in the Lake Ontario Plains, a pair in the small spruces just north of the Small Boat Harbor on the Buffalo waterfront, and flyover WHITE-W. CROSSBILLS in Buffalo and Amherst. In Ontario, up to 50 WHITE-W. CROSSBILLS at Short Hills Park, southwest of Saint Catharines.

In the Lake Ontario Plains and Genesee County, flocks of SNOW BUNTINGS with HORNED LARKS and LAPLAND LONGSPURS. On Marshall Road in the Orleans County Town of Yates, 35 to 50 LAPLAND LONGSPURS feeding on the roadside.

From Amherst State Park this week, a rare location for NORTHERN MOCKINGBIRD, plus 6 BROWN CREEPERS, CAROLINA WREN, WINTER WREN, 15 GOLDEN-CR. KINGLETS and a rare in winter FIELD SPARROW.

Dunkirk Harbor is even freezing over. Most recent report of PURPLE SANDPIPER was January 7 on the Main Street Beach. Also in the harbor, ICELAND GULL, L. BLACK-B. GULL, GLAUCOUS GULL, 94 GREAT BLACK-B. GULLS, and over 100 each of HOODED MERGANSER, AMERICAN COOT and D.-CREST. CORMORANT.

Other recent reports - ROUGH-LEGGED HAWKS in Chautauqua and Cattaraugus Counties. Six COOPER'S HAWKS across the Lake Ontario Plains. SHORT-EARED OWL in Yates. YELLOW-B. SAPSUCKERS at feeders in Orchard Park and Silver Creek. NORTHERN SHRIKE in Newfane. 70 BROWN-HEADED COWBIRDS in Wilson. And, on the Walmart pond in Fredonia, REDHEAD, COMMON GOLDENEYE and 2 AMERICAN BLACK DUCKS.
