Greetings: Although things are a bit slow at the wetland, I am pleased to say that a number of Virginia Rail have returned. The Osprey have been sitting on the nest for a couple of weeks now. Tiny has restricted an area on either side of the nest. This will prevent the incubator from leaving the nest of someone gets too close. There are quite a large number of Moorhen back at the wetland too.
On a lighter note: Rod was photographing a Red Admiral last week when a V. Rail poked its head around a reed. We tried many different noises to entice the little guy out but to no avail. Finally are started "grunting" (like Doug McRae demonstrated a couple of years ago). A few moments later, one little Rail ran 60 cms up the embankment "grunting", then turned tail and ran back down. Never saw this behavior before. Maureen The wetland is located at 71 County Road 64 exactly 7.2 kilometres south of exit 509 off Highway 401. _______________________________________________ ONTBIRDS is presented by the Ontario Field Ornithologists - the provincial birding organization.
