After a disappointingly low count and variety of gulls for last Saturday's Kitchener CBC, i went back for an unfortunately short visit today just after noon. At the pond NW of the intersection of Ira Needles and University (in the plaza with Walmart, Empire Theater etc.) found a number of gulls. 9 Greater Black-backed Gulls (7 adult, 2 juvenile) -- more than i have seen all year 1 Glaucous Gull (Adult) 4 Iceland Gull (Juvenile through Adult) and two very interesting gulls: A young cream coloured bird, approximately the size of a ring-billed gull with a relatively short black beak and very round head. I had initially thought it was an iceland gull, but the size and the beak seemed different. I have a number of photos to study tonight. The second interesting bird appeared to be a rather dark Lesser-Black Backed gull, with dull yellow legs, mottled head, and black beak with yellow tip and a small smudge of red. I have a number of close shots of this bird, but was not able to stick around and document open wings etc. The birds were still there when i left, with a large cloud of gulls over the active area of the dump and even more birds resting down at the Victoria St. pond. Certainly a large influx of gulls, relative to Saturday.
