Point Pelee National Park Migration Update for: May 13, 2012

* *

What seemed like it was going to be a slow day has turned into a rather
productive day at Point Pelee National Park with 29 warbler species seen by
11:00 a.m. today.

Highlights from the area from the Tip to the Sparrow Field included some of
the more late migrant warblers such as: MOURNING; CONNECTICUT; and WILSON’S
WARBLERS as well as HOODED, GOLDEN-WINGED and a number of others. Another
highlight from the tip was a potential CASSIN’S VIREO. The call is slightly
deeper and “burrier” than Blue-headed Vireo so listen for that one.

The east side of the Woodland Trail was quite busy with 19 warbler species
seen during the morning Friends of Point Pelee hike. The pair of
PROTHONOTARY WARBLERS continue to be the star performers.

YELLOW-BREASTED CHATS have been reported from both the Shuster Trail, just
east of the intersection with the Tilden Trail, and in a more usual spot
near the Cemetery.

CERULEAN WARBLER has been reported as being seen on the DeLaurier Trail.

Outside of the Park, a CATTLE EGRET was seen this morning on Leamington
Road 12 just north of Concession Road B.

Of note, yesterday a WURDEMANN’S HERON (a morph of the Great Blue Heron
usually seen in Florida) was seen flying south from the tip towards Pelee
Island. Birders should double-check any Great Blue Heron they see.**

Good Birding,
