Chritina & Mike were here for their annual visit from Mississauga; 4 visitors came from the Port Dover area; and, two stopped in from Tecumseh. Weather: The forecast did not get anything right about today's weather. The temperature ranged from 16-26.5 (not the forecasted high of 23); the winds started out of the south-east and shifted after the first hour to the south instead of the predicted easterly winds; winds were minimal all day, generally 2 - 3 km/hr instead of the 15 -20 km/hr that were forecasted. While the cloud cover was generally 70 - 80% it was hot out there. Raptor Observations: It was almost all Sharpies all the time, until the last couple hours when we finally had a little diversity. We ended the day with 311 birds of 10 species. The 176 Sharp-shinned Hawks were 83% of the raptors other than Turkey Vultures. In the last 3 hours of the count all birds, even the Sharpies, were mere dots in the northern sky. Non-raptor Observations: Not a big day for passerines. I guess even they need some wind. Highlights include: Killdeer - 20; Ruddy Turnstone -5; Chimney Swift - 22; Ruby-throated Hummingbird - 3; and, American Goldfinch - 48. Only 1 Monarch seen today. Predictions: Every weather station seems to have a different prediction for the area weather tomorrow. Environment Canada, however, is predicting South winds from 15 - 20 km/hr; the temperature ranging from 6 - 27C; sunny in the morning and clouding over in the afternoon with a threat of rain; and, very high humidity levels. It could be steamy. ======================================================================== Report submitted by Todd Pepper (pepper_t...@yahoo.ca) Holiday Beach Conservation Area information may be found at: http://hbmo.ca/ _______________________________________________ ONTBIRDS is presented by the Ontario Field Ornithologists - the provincial birding organization.
