Karl from Sterling Heights MI, Randal from Mississauga ON, and Dale from Hesston KS were out again today to enjoy a few hours before heading out. Several families were also up for short visits in the afternoon. Jeremy Bensette arrived to find the Ibis that has been hanging out for the last few days as well. Thanks to all who helped with the count today! Weather: Mostly cloudy today with only a couple breaks of sunshine later in the afternoon. Winds were out of the West to begin changing to Southwest by afternoon, but overall quite light. Temperatures started at 5.8C and warmed to 10.9 for the last hour of the count. Raptor Observations: Only 8 species noted today out of a possible 16. Turkey Vultures and Sharp-shinned Hawks dominated the count today. Missing totally from the count were Eagles...not a Bald or Golden to be found. We had a nice adult Peregrine Falcon "buzz the tower" today about 9am...not happy with our owl. It was quite the thrill as the Peregrine made 3 passes at the owl. Non-raptor Observations: Tundra Swans are moving thru...one group of 17 flew into the west end of the open marsh, rested for a couple of hours and then moved on. A total of 29 Tundra Swans today migrating. The Ibis that has been around the last couple of days was still here this morning. Thanks to Dan Lumm's 60 power eyepiece on his spotting scope we determined it is most definately a Glossy Ibis, no sign of a red iris. Glad that Jeremy Bensette was able to see the bird today since he made a special trip for exactly that. American Crows were on the move numbering 1711 today along with large flocks of Blackbirds (mostly Red-winged) who totalled 5462! Tree Swallows (38) are still coming thru along with American Goldfinch (125). Ruby and Golden-crowned Kinglets are still moving thru(10 & 30 respectively). Dark-eyed Juncos (14) and White-throated Sparrows (12) foraged all day in the brush around the tower. Predictions: Clouds and sun for tomorrow, starting off chilly at "freezing" and warming to a high of about 11 C. Winds start the day NW and then switch to NE by afternoon. LOOKS PROMISING FOR ALL YOU HAWK WATCHERS WHO CAN COME OUT ON MONDAY....darn job of mine will keep me away. ======================================================================== Report submitted by Cindy Isenhoff (akahawkla...@aol.com) Holiday Beach Conservation Area information may be found at: http://hbmo.ca/ _______________________________________________ ONTBIRDS is presented by the Ontario Field Ornithologists - the provincial birding organization.
