I had invaluable help from Dan Lumm, Jim McCoy, Edmund Pereira, Donny Moore, and Rayfield and Donald Pye. Many thanks to all for spending so much time w/ me on the tower today. Weather: The morning started off cool but warmed to 16C in the early afternoon. Winds were out of the North for the entire day and maximum gusts were 16km/h. Very little cloud cover throughout the day. Raptor Observations: A fantastic day w/ lots of raptors migrating. Turkey Vultures streamed over the tower steadily throughout the day and a total of 7,782 was counted. Lots of other hawks were mixed in w/ these large kettles of vultures. The skies were blue and everything was flying very high so it made identification a challenge at times! A dark-morph Rough-legged Hawk was a highlight in the morning and late in the day, an immature Golden Eagle and Peregrine Falcon finished out the last half hour of the count nicely. Non-raptor Observations: A Great Horned Owl calling until about 7:00am and 3 Snow Geese flying over in the morning were early highlights for the day. Passerines migrating in good numbers included Blue Jays, European Starlings, blackbird flocks, American Goldfinch, and Pine Siskins. See today's eBird list: http://ebird.org/ebird/view/checklist?subID=S20202660 Predictions: Sunday's weather calls for afternoon temperatures from 13-16C, sunny all day, and east winds. Numbers will not be as high as the past couple days w/ north winds but a good diversity of species is now being seen at the tower even if the numbers are lower. ======================================================================== Report submitted by Jeremy Hatt (hattjer...@hotmail.com) Holiday Beach Conservation Area information may be found at: http://hbmo.ca/ _______________________________________________ ONTBIRDS is presented by the Ontario Field Ornithologists - the provincial birding organization.
