Greetings: Today marked the opening of the BCW to all valid permit holders. What a treat to walk around the two cells. I would suggest everyone get a permit and see what the little brown rodents have done during the Winter to increase birdwatcher viewing. I am sure the local trapper will be in there soon to reduce the numbers.
Today I saw 70+ Wood Duck, I did not know that they could give a warning call much like the Canada Goose (only not so loudly and rather squeaky). There was also 4 Northern Shoveller (2M/2F), 2 Gadwall, 10+ Bufflehead, 4 Mute Swan, 4 Killdeer and numerous Mallard, Canada Geese, Red winged Blackbirds, a few Common Grackle, Mourning Doves and Robins. I could also heard a Brown Headed Cowbird, a Northern Flicker and White-breasted Nuthatches. There were a few little brown jobbies about but I could not make them out clearly - my binoculars were in the car. Over half of the north cell had almost been clear-cut by the Muskrat, of which I saw numerous also sunning themselves. There are also many clear-cut patches in the south cell. The wetland is located (Exit 509) 7.5 kilometres south highway 401 on County Road 64.
