Hey all, I support a new release: the sooner the better, because a lot of bugs and questions that are now appearing are already saved or implemented! But it might still be a good idea to launch a beta first, for a couple of weeks. I think we should do that not on our official repository but more as a separate download, or a PPA in launchpad... Just to see if we overlooked some bugs...
However there are some things we might have to fix before launching to the real 1.0: - There is this KDE bug that causes backintime to freeze: it hangs in the compare to phase... It only happens with KDE: https://bugs.launchpad.net/backintime/+bug/441628 (and duplicates) - If the config file is write blocked it should give a warning: https://bugs.launchpad.net/backintime/+bug/480180 - I still have to add the .gvfs to the default excluded patterns: https://bugs.launchpad.net/backintime/+bug/422132 - When a error in the plugins occur it should continue and not hang forever: https://bugs.launchpad.net/backintime/+bug/446168 - Add the ionice option: https://bugs.launchpad.net/backintime/+bug/378656, as I also experience really performance loss when a BiT task is running, what for example in case of watching a movie, becomes quite irritating. Those are the most important bugs at the moment I guess. A feature that I am also working on at the moment, however I do not know if we can wait for that, as I am really restricted in my free time nowadays, is a configuration wizard, that just asks the three questions: what, when and where, and would offer a full restore option, as there quite many requests for such a thing. But I have just started on that, and figured out that I have no clue how to get the wizard GTK+ object to work properly, so I guess I will go for separate dialogs that are interlinked.... And a thing that I would like to see in 1.0 is to have a feedback mechanism for restore, like we have already for doing backups (I think it could be quite easy to implement, just hook it up to the message system and to the plugins that we have already for the backups), but that is more an important wish than a necessity for 1.0. I use the Included per Scheduled option, because my backup spans 100 Gb, although it takes slightly more than 2 minutes to do a full incremental backup, I only backup a subfraction of it every 10 minutes. The advantage of this option is in respect to the profiles, that it shows all the snapshots in the same view, and covers the excludes and includes automatically (with profiles you should not forget to exclude your other profiles). On the other hand leaving it out will fix some issues: At the moment we cannot use the --delete-excluded option, what leads to "ghost folders" ( https://bugs.launchpad.net/backintime/+bug/406092), as that would cause the need for a very complicated hardlinking procedure (as we have to link the current snapshot to several older snapshots depending on the scheduled tasks, or more easily to a permanent new-snapshot folder, that just updates every cycle and would have to branch off the specific folders into the snapshots for specific time-points). To have the a complete view of the available snapshots we could implement a show all profiles feature, what could be easy to implement using the other-folders config entry. But that could be a version 2.0 feature... Actually I think I support your removal, as it would definitely reduce the complexity of the program...
