Sorry if I'm showing my ignorance here, but a server that is running as a
secondary only needs entries in it's named.conf file doesn't it?

I have to agree with that. One of the problems though is finding the time to
write all the little scripts, then eventually tie them all together into
usefull management tools. but like all other sysadmins, I'm getting to it...
Meantime, having access to the secondary named.conf, I simply use ftp to
append the new entry to the secondary conf file, and use cron to reload
named on the secondary once a day. One day ----- I'l write the bit that says
"only reload if named.conf has changed".... maybe tomorrow.

I also believe that exchanging secondaries should not cost anything. The old
"You show me yours and I'll show you mine" thing works fine.
> If my company sets up a "secondary DNS only" service,
I see. If it's set up as a service, that is, where one of the parties can't
act as a secondary in exchange, then a small fee may be appropriate. Like a
few dollars a year to cover bandwidth. But setting up a server as a
Secondary _only_ is a waste of resources I think. even though I have one
here doing just that...but it's and old box and needs replacing soon anyway.
but then. If I'm being charged a dollar a year to have a domain on my
service secondaried somewhere else, then that's a cost I can't pass on to my
customer - so it becomes another cost to me.
Just as a matter of interest - what IS the load on a machine running X
number of secondary zones in it's named.conf? has any one done any stats?
Sorry if I'm intruding on someone elses discussion.. it's interesting.
