Steve,
Fear not, there are agreements in place ensuring that another registrar
picks up the pieces. Check out ICANN's website on how to become an ICANN
Accredited Registrar and the special requirements are listed there. However,
this is theory which has never been tested out in practice, so better stick
to the more prominent registrars which are less likely to go out of business
:-)
