I've actually investigated what it would take to start an escrow
service, and I can tell you it is not as simple as it looks.  The
legal requirements alone are quite extensive, and could be quite
costly to comply with.

Escrow services are regulated by law, so it's not just as simple as
being able to "do it yourself."
