My vet has had me use cydectin on and off for years. We may worm once to
twice a year and we do the fecal counts each month. We did have an older
ewe Last year that started coughing and we bought some cydectin for sheep
and goats. We just about lost her. Our vet indicated he found out that the
sheep and goat cydectin did not work on his sheep and goats. We just about
lost her and did switch back to the cattle brand of cydectin. We use 1cc
for every 25 lbs.

I posted a few weeks ago about a ewe that had been ill. She'd been
down while pregnant and had a swollen and cloudy eye. One dose of
LA200 and she was right as rain. She lambed out fine and all seemed
well for about 4 weeks. I noticed her lying down again and three days
later she was dead despite a dose of LA 200. I wondered if she'd
retained a placenta or had a dead lamb in her, but no discharge or
smell.

In any case I now have a lamb with a swollen eye (have treated) not
hers, but the lamb of a ewe that came from the same place as her.
I'm wondering... despite really no signs, is this sounding like
chlamydia? All my other sheep are healthy and robust. The ewe that
died was really wobbly the last day. Appeared to have some
neurological disfunction.

I do have a foal in hospital with joint ill. Brings about suspect
common bacteria. Perhaps if I knew which was affecting the sheep, we
could save the foal.

If I remember, Joint Ill is a staph infection. If it is int he
hospital, then the vet should be giving it an antibiotic cocktail...
The lamb.. I would give your LA 200 and also 3cc combiotic daily. Also
1cc of Baytril if you can get it... You will also have to give it some
probios or a similar supplement to keep the gut working. Since we do
not know what the real problem is, we have to use everything to save the
animal. This sounds like Chlamydia.

I did a google search to confirm my original suspicions. It appears
that your problems are indeed related. The Merck Manual lists joint ill
also in sheep and caused by Erysipelis (sp.) Again, theis sounds very
much like a staph infection. I still would use Baytril and
Pennicillin. Chlamydia is supposed to be killed with tetracycline, but
if it is campylobacter then you need to use all three. Campylobacter
has many diferent strains.

A joint type infection is usually staph very similar to Arthritis. All
of these problems can come from an untreated umbilical cord. The
bacterin gets in the soil in the pens. One method states to burn a bale
of hay on the area to kill the bacterin.

I have a yearling ram that has been sick and have been to the vet several
times and he keeps on going. Is slowly getting stronger but from him being
sick found that some of my guys have worms. The vet thinks it is due to the
crazy weather and not having lots of room.
I have been worming with ivermectin but have now been told studies are
showing it is not working very well on sheep and the vet suggested cydectin
and safeguard to rotate and only use ivermect 1 times a year. He wanted me
to do the cydectin for the first rotation and told me a few places I could
get it cheaper and I now have it in hand.
Now here is the problem.
He is on vacation for 2 weeks, the wormer states it has not been tried on
bred ewes in the US and the tech at the vet clinic will not let me talk to
another vet since I did not get it there.
I want to get everyone done at the same time so I am asking my fellow BB
people for assistance.
Can cydectin be used on bred ewes. Mine are all about 1/2 way through
pregnancy.
Please help.

Hi,
We wormed our sheep with Cydectin in January and our ewes dropped lambs in
Feb and March with no problems. I don't recall seeing any warning on our
package about bred ewes - we didn't have any problem. Do not use on lambs
younger than 3 months - for them we use ivomec drench.

I would say that worming with safeguard is like tossing money down the drain
- it is worthless. I rotate between cydectin and ivomec injectable (drench
for small lambs) - although the vets say that invomec does not work, I
continue to have good results with it. I only had a problem when, following
vet's advice, I switched to safeguard!

I found out about cydectin by contacting a research vet at the Florida A&M
University - if you can't get your vet to talk to you, I'm sure this man
will be happy to help you - he was very helpful with us. They do research
there on sheep and wormers, etc. :

You may also have a university in your state that does research like this
who may be able to help out.?
