Monday morning when my girlfriend went out to feed her mama LGD with newborn pups she found something different. Amid the 8 white bodies nursing was a black body, also nursing.
A Black Hawaiian Barbado ewe had lambed then left the baby to join her friends out grazing. The baby toddled over and found the dog, who washed and dried her, and settled in. When the first-time mama came back with the herd she called, but didn't know what to look for. The baby has no interest in her natural mother as she bonded with the dog. My girlfriend is now bottle-feeding this ewe lamb because her Great Pyrenees has more than enough pups to nurse.
