Hello Sue,

Helmut is correct about a true Barbados Blackbelly ram and ewes are polled.
I also have polled stock. But the Blackbelly Barbados Sheep Association
International recognizes both breeds in their registry. Check their web
site at www.blackbellysheep.org and look under breed standards. If your
sheep met their standards they can be registered. Send them a photo of your
sheep and the registration application which is also on line. I think you
have to be a member to register them - $30.00.

Subject: [blackbelly] True or not True BB

I have to say that what we raise are Barbados - they are horned. I had sent
a photo of our ram to Helmut and he said we had a nice ram but not a
purebred. We know that and I'll admit it somewhat hurt to hear that but then

again I know he isn't a purebred BB - he's horned. But he's the closest
thing we have to being. In our part of the country, they seem to admire the
horns on these rams as there are lots of hunters around. I don't think that
the taste in meat would vary much as they are somewhat the same breed. Some
of our ewes have had scurs and others haven't. My husband would like to
cross breed our ram with St. Criox to get a larger carcass but I'm not even
sure I'm sold on that. We are preparing to start a 2nd herd consisting of a
ram from our ram and ewes from our ram and our other ewes. We'd like to see
what we get. But alas, they will have horns. We still are glad that we are
allowed to be part of this listserve and that we can share our experieinces
and learn from the rest of you also. Sue Miller
