I'd like to add something to the talk on tanning hides. Last summer when I 
tried to dry a hide, I had some difficulty.  When packing up the dry hide to 
ship to Pennsylvania (better place than CA, Sue), I found some hair to be 
very loose--pulling right out of the skin. This pretty much made the hide 
useless and I threw it away.  I asked the tanners at Bucks County what might 
have gone wrong and learned a valuable lesson: unless 100% of the fat is 
scraped off the skin before stretching, the skin will begin to rot in those 
areas, causing the hair to loosen.

I stand corrected Rick and Helmut. That made sense once I thought about it.
I had read that somewhere though. I need to start documenting where I read
things!!!!!
Carol,I will see what I can find and do some web searches to get some
information. I know the hides we have done turn out beautiful. I still 
think

next time I will try to have them tanned into leather. We send our hides to
a place in California but they only except hides from licensed 
taxidermists.
