The question of feeding has be given a lot of input lately. I guess I'll add my 2 cents worth. We are located in north central Florida, so cold is not as bad as it in the north ( Georga & above) Ha ! We have about 60 + Blackbellies and 10 goats in the same pin, The sheep are grouped as follows. 3 adult Rams (2 BB's & 1 Dall) 12 3 week old lambs, about 20 adult ewes and the rest last springs lambs. We feed about 100 lbs of Southern States All Stock & 50 lbs of cracked corn daily. They also have a round bail to feed freely on. I'm sure that they are over fed but they always seem to want more.
As far as the amount of useable meat one should receive from processing a lamb. I just took my 1st young ram in for wrapping and although I was unable to weigh him prior to processing, I think he weighed about 85 lbs. After cleaning, cutting & wrapping we got back 64 lbs of meat. The cost to kill & process was $40.00.
I have a request for our group. We would like to locate a few eastern european Racka sheep. They are a triple purpose sheep. meat, milk, & wool. If anyone reading the list has any leads, please let us know.
