We just received back from BuckCounty Fur Products Inc. in Quakertown, Pa four ram hides. We had them very nicely prepared and shipped them. There were no holes in them and we had salted,de-meated and de-fatted them to the extreme. There were two 21 month old rams, 1 14 month old ram and one 8 month old ram. The older rams were in full mane and quite large. The 14 month old ram had a less sized mane but very exceptable. Of course the 8 month old ram's mane was smaller. However, what we received back was a shock to us. The rams (especially the big ones) manes had been "trimmed"!! Between the manes on the four animals it would be hard to determine which was the older. After talking with the owner, (I suppose owner) I was informed they always "trim" the hides sent to them. I asked "if they knew the difference between a wool sheep or a hair sheep?" His reply was it didn't matter they always "trim" the hides. In other words, they must use a pattern for their "trim" as it was very hard to tell the difference between hides. He also said this so called trimming was always done because the loose ends could foul up the machinery. Loose ends ment flanking, legs, extended neck and mane apparently as we received our hides missing these items. Even where the hide ended they had chosen to "trim" the hair itself on the manes. We sent our hides to this company as we felt it would be a cheaper way to go. However, we lost any profit from these hides as their value was lessened by the "trimming" this company feels fit to do. With our original shipping fee and their charge plus return shipping fee (plus we did all the prep work) these unsatisfiedable hides cost us $55.00 each. We have taken hides to a taxidermist, fresh off the animal and paid $75.00 for a very nice hide return. Never again will we ever use Buck County Fur Products Inc. in Quakertown, Pa to do any kind of hide finish for us.
