Hiya Erin! Here are my answers... based on... hmmm.. puppies! ;-)
In selecting for rams (or puppies) if all things are equal (all gorgeous, breed type, healthy with good genes) I would pick the one with the best personality.
In puppies, depending upon breed, this might mean different things, but I usually try to pick a puppy that demonstrates a desire to be with me, it makes training waaay easier.
In a ram, I would think that a laid back, more docile attitude would be safer & that's what I'd select for. Something with a personality that would not try to stomp you at every turn.
I'd look to the mom to see what her personality was like... is she a raging loon? Very reactive? or is she a 'thinker' among sheep? How did her previous lambs grow up, personality wise?
Choose the ram who's personality as well as handsome looks you would like to see in mass quantities in your flock.
The 2nd question, I think would also be answered with this same ideal.
If all things are equal, choose the ewe who is pretty laid back & easy going. She'll be easier to train & have an easier time at the fair.
