Carol, thanks for the feedback. With my limited space,
I'll probably have to settle for one pasture approximating the 4000sf of your
smaller pasture. I guess the alternative is to sell him off and get another
bloodline after the next lambing.
I'm becoming an expert on "small paddocks" since that is
all I have to work with! Currently I'm keeping the 5 adults and 9 lambs in
~3/4 acre lots and, by planting winter grazing and applying fertilizer and
rotating, could actually sustain them year round without grain. I used
corn/oats/alfalfa pellets during the last month of pregnancy, and the first two+
months of lactation. I'm giving them a taste of corn each day just to keep them
coming to the catch pen. One thought on several small areas is the cost of
providing shelter in each paddock. I use a simple (but attractive) 8x12 portable
(on skids) manger - or provide access into the small barn area. Also, gates and
paddock size need to accommodate your tractor and equipment.
