The numbers game is a real problem. I sell mainly broodstock, in fact most of us do,
& usually there is a waiting list for ewe lambs, so what ram or wethered lambs there
are to go for eat can be covered by ethnic or gate sales now. texas is getting on
theband wagon promoting & selling all breeds of hair sheep, something that might work
in other areas of the country. One of our producers in Canada has started a co op &
is doing very well, moving & needing about 1200 head at this time. I have a fellow
who rang up awhile back & he wants all the meat lambs, at a descent price, we can put
out. He is looking at a start up of 2000 head a year.
I run about 100 head of ewes, St Croix & Katahdin, 1 barb...I cut back last year
because of an injury, but with the demand increasing, I wil probably go up some this
year if any lambs left. Had 300 head last year. Thankfully the grass will be on soon
& they can go out & feed themselves!
My dec. lambs are looking really good.
But I wish I had more togo to packers if for nothing else to get numbers up...
