We had a lamb born a week ago today. Mom rejected him after she had the 2nd
one. We know it got 1st milk. Didn't know what we were going to do til our
daughter said she and her hubby would take him and bottle feed him as they
would like to start a separate flock over at their place. Everything was
going fine til Thursday evening. The little ram named Oliver wouldn't walk
on 1 front leg. By Friday night he wouldn't stand on either front legs. So
we went over and looked and called the vet. He said white muscle disease.
Oliver was eating - taking bottle and nibbling hay and wasn't having
difficulty with releaving himself. The vet recommended Vitamin E and
commented that the ewe may have had a deficiency of Vitamin E in her milk,
therefore knowing that she doesn't have enough quality milk for 2 so she
rejects one. HAs anyone heard this explained this way before? He suggested
that we give the ewe Vitamin E just before lambing. The little guy got a
shot this morning and did stand long enough to pee after about 4 hours. Is
this considered a medication or just what it is - a vitamin? We do have
sheep mineral blocks with Vitamin E and selenium in them but maybe not
enough Vitamin E. Just curious as to what you think on this. We should know
by tomorrow if this will work for Oliver or not. Sue
