In range country, horns are very important. And the shape of horns, not the
size.
The horns should be sharp, some have horns if you would catch the ewe by the
horn, the hand would may show some cuts.
Dogs and coyotes learn very well to stay away. This is important in large
flocks.
Have a look at http://users.iafrica.com/m/mw/mwdatru/selection.htm and you
see how the ewe is taking on a dog.
It is amazing to see how fast such a ewe attacks, most time she goes 5 m
close to the dog as she would not be interested what happens and looks in a
different direction. And in one moment to the other she has the horns in the
dogs pelt.
