I've been reading with interest (and occasionally
commenting on) the horned vs. polled debate. I thought I saw where one person
implied that the strong roman nose on ewes was perhaps indicative of a "lot of
African blood" (?meaning closely related to the original population?). I have 2
ewes with exceptional roman noses (put most rams to shame) but both are scurred
(indicating to me the influence of x-breeding). They could easily be mistaken
for the poster Barbado ewe on the okstate website. I also have a couple of ewes
with more slender muzzles that look like the ladies pictured for ears and eyes
on the BBSAI breed standards page. All are registered. SO, which ones would be
called Barbados Blackbelly and which ones Barbado (or American Blackbelly).
Ditto for the amount of black on the face, white tipped tail, horns, etc. My
point is that breed standards should be able to readily discriminate "pure
bred or registerable" from crosses (both rams and ewes) by sight, if they
can't are there truly 2 separate breeds?
