One of my ewes prolapse her vagina but not her uterus.
What we did was to wash everything well and then give
it a rinse with an antiseptic hand wash that you can get
from the drug store. Not the antiseptic soap mind you,
the hand rinse! Then we made the ewe kneel on her front
knees. Most to the prolapse sucked back in by itself after
a minute or two. The rest we lubricated with K-Y jelly,
(again from the drug store) and then we inserted a "ewe
spoon" that can be gotten from most sheep supply places.
Since you don't have one handy I would call a vet. If you
manage to get everything back anyways you must then
prevent the ewe from staining. As one person said Ron
Parker's method of trussing up the ewe with baling twine
works wonders. Tie several pieces of twine together to
form a piece about 10 ft. long. Hand this over her shoulders
just back of her neck. Cross over her chest and go between
her two front legs then bring it up her sides and cross over
her back and let them hang over her sides in front of her
back legs. Take the two ends and go between her back legs
(don't pinch her udder) and bring it up on either side of her vulva
and tail and then through the pieces crossed over her back and
up to the neck piece. Then draw everything up so tight she can
barely walk. This prevents her from humping up her back and
straining to pop everything back out. You can tie some short
pieces over her vulva to help keep everything in. I used this
harness with the spoon and saved the ewe. This is suppossed
to work as well without the spoon but I used the spoon as I
had one on hand. I also gave her penicillan shots for several
days and she recovered just fine. After 3 days I took the harness
off and a few months later she went off to someone's dinner table.
I was not willing to try lambing her again. Pity, she was a nice ewe.
If you want to try a spoon I am sure Premier or another supplier
would express mail you one. The spoon was about 3 dollars and
express mail runs about 13.65. Good luck. Mona
