I know that most of you aren't interested in cattle, probably, but if anyone wants to get an eyeful of information about natural pasture improvement, etc., pick up a copy of Joel Salatin's "Salad Bar Beef" book.
In this book he states that he has used nothing to worm his cattle forever, except Shaklee Basic H in the drinking water. Now Basic H is not certified organic, because Shaklee will not release the formula, but it is non-toxic and drinkable (if you have peculiar tastes). He uses a small quantity in the drinking water for 2-3 days. That's it. Now, the big payoff to using Shaklee Basic H in the drinking water, besides its reported worm-killing activity, is that it wipes out mosquitoe larvae. I slop a little in the water tanks all summer long. It is an outstanding surfactant, and apparently, breaks the surface tension of the water sufficiently that the larvae can't get to the surface to breathe, and probably the adults can't stay on top of the water to lay eggs. A little goes a long way. Funny, it didn't occur to me to think I was "worming" my sheep while killing the skeeters, but I'll keep a close eye on fecals and see how we go. Basic H can now be purchased on line from Shaklee. BTW, there is a "primitive breeds" sheep class at the local county fair on Friday (Clackamas County, Oregon). I don't know what to expect, but I'm going to go see what turns up.
