Another tidbit from the Salatin book...
Apparently pinkeye can be regarded as a deficiency disease - iodine, to
be specific.  The iodine found in kelp can be metabolized if needed, but
excreted if not, unlike the iodine found in commercially compounded
mineral supplements, which are apparently assimilated by the animal
whether needed or not.    All my critters have free access to kelp.
Sometimes they devour it, sometimes they leave it alone.  Perhaps it can
help avert future vulnerabilities to infection.
