As Shaleh pointed out, Blackbox only requires Xlib (and the associated devel header if you're compiling from source). I've taken something very close to this route with my systems. I tend to avoid most Gnome and KDE apps due to their dependancies. Obviously, there are some dependancies that will creep in as you start installing one application or another (such as GTK for Sylpheed). I try to make it a point to use GTK and QT apps so I don't introduce any more dependancies and can reuse the existing libraries I already have installed. -- Jamin W.
