I think it was discussed a while back and that's when it was decided to
leave things like this. I myself use Sylpheed-Claws which can deal with
such issues in a number of ways (including per-folder preferences and
a reply-to-list button) so I can't say I really mind. Reply-to-all is also
a simple solution; I for one actually prefer a copy of the message in my
inbox, to make sure I don't miss it.

Not in Blackbox 0.65. It works in Blackbox 0.70, which is currently
available only from CVS. Be warned that you'll also need bbkeys from CVS
for that.

Here's a classic tip: if you want to control the order in which these
applications start, run them like this:

sleep 1 && app1 &
sleep 2 && app2 &
...

You might enjoy the Blackbox slit too. Check out dockapps.org for a bunch
of goodies. They load in the slit as soon as they are loaded.

If you use Blackbox 0.65 you may also want to use bbpager.

That's pretty much how most of us Blackbox users do it, I know I do. Be
warned that for the newest versions of Gnome and KDE desktop environments
you'll need Blackbox 0.70 after all; they are all based on the new NetWM
standard from freedesktop.org, while Blackbox 0.65 implements ICCCM (the
old "standard").
