Jan,

I think what you sent will help, but I'm a greenhorn. Here's my Sessions:

[gino@hafiz Sessions]$ ls -l
total 12
-rwxr-xr-x    1 root     root         2075 Jun  5 13:17 Gnome
-rwxr-xr-x    1 root     root           44 Apr  3 14:32 KDE
-rwxr-xr-x    1 root     root         2189 Jun  5 13:17 Xsession

My home dir doesn't have a .xinitrc file or bin dir. What if I create them?

I read the .xsession-errors file; here it is, if it's informative:

[gino@hafiz gino]$ cat .xsession-errors
SESSION_MANAGER=local/hafiz.ghazal:/tmp/.ICE-unix/2687
gpilotd-Message: gnome-pilot 0.1.57 starting...

Thank you; I appreciate your willingness to help.
