(1) would be a whole lot better (imho) if the spaces between the top and bottom of the left-hand inner box and the outer box were the same height as the width of the space at the left of the inner box (make sense?). Same goes for (2) (and the space between the left hand boxes should be the same, too). And maybe there could be a little more contrast in the colours happening in those ones.
