I also build using the moz method, but I have to say that RSS and Movemail support is not there for me either, so I don't think that's the issue at stake. I do agree that the moz method is easier when you finally get used to not typing ./configure, make, make install. BUT, there is something broken in the Thunderbird build and all the moz method does is let you script the CMMI calls a bit. The underneath build is exactly the same.
