I wrote a Makefile to automate it. It also builds and installs all the
plugins I use. It doesn't quite follow the book, so I've kept it to
myself, but it's available upon request.

I used it in my last upgrade. It's a beauty -- small, configurable, and
it works. A mention in the book is probably worth it, if it increases
the chance someone frustrated by the other options will give it a shot.
