According to the book (icedtea page):
"If you've installed only the binary distribution, the Java plugin is 
located at |$JAVA_HOME/jre/lib//|<arch>|//IcedTeaPlugin.so|. Make a 
symbolic link to the file in that directory from your browser(s) plugins 
directory. If you've built from source, move on to the IcedTea-Web-1.0.1 
<cid:[email protected]> instructions to build the browser 
plugin."
I understand that icedtea-web contains the java plugin, which is pretty 
useful...
