I am not positive, but I think the Samba devs went with Heimdal in-tree over MIT. While either may be usable as a system krb5, if Heimdal, it likely will be getting more attention nowadays WRT to Samba. I have always preferred (and used) Heimdal over MIT due only to the license. Last time I looked, configuration of both was nearly identical.
