I compiled the alsa driver in module, but it doesn't seem to solve the
problem. And I did NO udev configuration ;-) The sound works, not the
games (crash after a while).

Good. That's eliminating a lot of stuff.

Yes. It certainly isn't the alsa stuff. I think now it is more a question of graphic card. So I definitly am a szcrumlfbold for calling for help about sound when it has nothing to do with it. Gasp :-(

I have a ATI Radeon 9000 Pro. It worked fine with previous versions of
XFree and X.Org, but the 6.8.2 version seems to go wrong with it. There
are some traces on internet about similar problems, but nothing conclusive
so far. Even on the LFS lists, there are related events.

When I say "crash", let's be precise :

- if the game is running full screen, my keyboard is inoperant, I
CAN'T get back to a console to kill anything. So hard reboot (smash
the keyboard, throw away the 30 pounds monitor, axe the tower... and
finally press the little button) is my only option.

That's rarely permissions. That's Bod Programming, dodgy memory, dodgy disk, or overheated CPU. Are the fa

- if the game is running windowed, I loose the use of anything in X,
but at least I can reach a console and kill the crashed game. But game
in window is no fun :-(

You appear to have a favourite game, by the sound of it. If you start X
from runlevel 3 (hack /etc/inittab for a while if necessary) and then
switch to that console after the crash, are there any interesting error
messages? If not, the system won't know it's crashed.

I didn't mention this, but I log on runlevel 3, being too lazy to install xdm, which I previously had problem with (or was it wdm ?). And I CAN'T GET TO THAT F... CONSOLE !!!!!!!!

So if there are other Radeon users on this list (especially those using
DRI, I think), I'd like to ask them a few questions.

I don't have Radeon but I had similar problems with Xorg freezing until I installed the latest NVidia drivers.
