 What you have to do is identify what you want to install (e.g. X and
the window manager) then look at the dependencies, recursively for each
package until you have no more dependencies.  Then you can derive a
build order that works. e.g. X.org depends on png and fontconfig and
optionally on PAM, png depends on nothing, fontconfig depends on
freetype and expat with optional dependancy on docbook-utils...

 Note that there is no single correct order for building the desktop, it
varies as you include or exclude optional dependencies.
