The duplication isn't much more than that of glib providing it's own
framework for collections and stuff. No, the difference is more that KDE
choose to release a small number of large packages, while Gnome does it
the other way around.

I suspect the Gnome way works well for the package maintainers since it
reduces the amount of coordination effort needed for releases, but it
makes a source install a lot more work. Most of the devs use scripted
setups like jhbuild to build everything...
