Actually, I doubt the photosmart printer cares anything at all about the postscript version, but in the linux printing process it does. A very brief, non technical explanation: Postscript is just a printer controll language, newer versions (level) of postscript support higher resolution, more colors, and provide more tricks to do with the dots. Only higher end printers support PS directly, which is where Gimp-print, Cups, hpijs, and the foomatic and pstoraster scripts come in. *nix handles every print job in postscript and then sends it to the print que where cups and friends poke and prod, and twist and contort it into a language that the printer understands. In short, you most likely will want level 3. http://www.linuxprinting.org/ should be the definative resouce for you to learn the details of the printing process, even has some ramblings about ps language commands burried in there someplace.
